Torah Reading: Genesis 1:1-6:8
B’reisheet | בראשית | In the beginning
Torah Reading: Genesis 1:1-6:8
This Torah Portion tells the story of God creating the universe and people (Genesis 1-2). It also speaks of the first sin on the part of Adam and Eve (Genesis 3). Then we learn about one of Adam and Eve’s sons, Cain, who becomes the first murderer by killing his brother Abel (Genesis 4). Then there’s an account of Adam’s descendants all of the way to Noah who is said to find favor in God’s eyes (Genesis 5-6:8).
From the very beginning, human beings have been quick to blame others rather than take responsibility for their own wrongdoing. In this week’s Torah portion, Bereshit, we see how Adam and Eve’s response to their sin reveals a tendency that continues to plague humanity today. As followers of Yeshua, we are called to break this cycle of blame-shifting through humility, repentance, and personal responsibility.
